Looking Back

Founded in 1866 as L.H. Kurtz Co., the business specialized in wholesale hardware and plumbing materials. In 1975, Marty Walsh III, a New Britain, Conn, Native (which in the early 1960’s was considered the “Hardware Center of the World”) and his wife Katie (Kurtz) Walsh bought the builders hardware portions of L.H. Kurtz Co. and formed Kurtz-Walsh Builders Hardware Company. In 1989, the company’s hardware adorned the doors of Air Force One used by former president George H. Bush.

Moving Ahead

In 1993, Kurtz-Walsh Builders Hardware merged with Iowa Des Moines Door & Hardware establishing Walsh Door & Hardware Company - a business that fabricates and distributes doors, frames and hardware to general contractors for commercial use.

Walsh Door & Hardware moved to its current location at 2600 Delaware in 1994. In 1999, the company expanded its facilities and currently occupies over 30,000 square feet of space.

In July 2001, Walsh Door & Hardware opened a branch office in Iowa City. Focusing on customer service as priority number one necessitated the additional office. Walsh Door’s presence in eastern Iowa is growing at a rapid pace and this expansion has enabled us to provide that portion of the state with the same quality service that is enjoyed by our current customers.

Today, the company employs over 40 people and is always searching for quality candidates to join the team.
